Stephen Eakin's installation at Rosalux Gallery's third annual juried exhibition gave artgoers the most compelling reason to pause and ponder at its June 16 opening.
Titled "Residue," the piece consists of more than 1,500 photographic slides arranged in meticulous rank-and-file over five window-sized lightboxes. The slides -- documentary mug shots of banal and impersonal household items -- comprise a complete inventory of Eakin's earthly possessions, from an Anti-Flag CD to a set of kitchen knives.
Eakin's intention is to bequeath each individual slide to an anonymous onlooker, free of charge; interested parties were invited to register their names in his legally drafted will.
Upon Eakin's death, the slides will be mailed out accordingly to those who signed up. Gimmick or no, it's a clever idea. But what a pain in the ass for the executor. |
