STAR TRIBUNE: November 2005

by Mary Abbe

WAR AND PEACE

ONGOING: Concerned about the U.S. war in Iraq, two Twin Cities artists are showing paintings and manipulated photos that incorporate soldier's words and military images. Painter Kate Pabst weaves into her expressive paintings fragments of poetry and commentary from blogs written by soldiers serving in Iraq. Camille Gage adds paint, text and collage elements to images taken by military photographers of coffins and Iraq casualties arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, the country's largest military mortuary. Intended as a meditation on war and peace, the show claims to take no stand on the current conflict.
