Fog is a perceptual threshold between the expected and the unknown; it vanishes horizons, confounds orientation, and alters destinations. At this threshold, we are haunted -nature is neither what we remember nor what we wish it to be.

Rosalux artist Frank James Meuschke’s new, large scale works tap landscape's deep well with painterly, apparition-like photographs. Shot through various types of polyethylene sheeting, his images dislocate sites of ecological or personal significance. The resulting blurred photographs dissolve the symbolic power of idealized nature into a disorienting landscape of strange beauty.

Frank James Meuschke maintains a landscape-focused practice out of his Minnesota studio. He has exhibited with Mills Gallery, Boston, Museum of the City of New York, Virginia Commonwealth University Fine Arts Gallery, Portland Museum of Art, Socrates Sculpture Park, Waseca Art Center, among others. He has been in residence at MacDowell, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Weir Farm Art Center, and Henry Street Settlement. Meuschke is a recipient of a 2018, 2021, and 2022 Minnesota State Arts Board grant.

Frank James Meuschke is a fiscal year 2022 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. The prints in this exhibition were made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
