About The Exhibition:

Laura Stack's "Diary of an Artist" exhibit is based on her recent interview, "Biophilia," with editor Richard Bright in Interalia Magazine, an online international venue dedicated to the interactions between the arts and sciences.

"Biophilia," a love of life and the living world, is a key description of Stack's artwork. Her biology-inspired paintings and drawings featured in the interview are the main focus of her Rosalux exhibit. This exhibition of art pieces from the interview brings her writing to life and provides an immersive experience. For Stack, making art is like keeping a journal. Looking at her artwork created over the last twenty years, she recognizes the significant experiences specific bodies of work represent. The art featured in the "Diary of an Artist" exhibit tells a story of Stack's ability to capture her experiences and perceptions through biological abstraction.

Artist Statement:

Stack's art practice is driven by a deep reverence for the natural world and all living things. A transformative experience left an indelible imprint. Laura held her father's hand as he took his last breath—feeling his heartbeat fade away, she was profoundly moved. This experience heightened her perception of 'the pulse of life,' a feeling that lingers within her and continues to inspire her artwork.

Stack's art-making is a journey of contemplation, exploring the origins of life and the changing definition of what constitutes 'life' in an age of bioengineering. She creates abstract paintings that allude to fictional organisms and biomes, drawing inspiration from biology, synthetic biology, and extraordinary freaks of nature. She is both a participant and observer as her imagined life forms take shape on paper.
