Mystery Spot: Paintings by Mary Gibney
The name of the show is Mystery Spot, which brings to mind the gravity defying zones of kitschy tourist attractions but also the veil between worlds, possinble between life and death or whatever comes after consciousness. There are bar scenes where the bartender is keeping her eye on some untrustworthy patrons, but also scenes of undefined spaces that question...What do we really know? What are we searching for? Why is there always a cat there?
These paintings are about searching/seeking in a time of unsteadiness. Spinning the wheel of fortune for some sort of guidance, surrounded by slightly threatening ghostly creatures. Searching for meaning in an off-kilter zone between reality and unreason, or possibly life and death. Questing for knowledge.. of what kind I can't say.. I painted these but they are pulled from my subconscious. I have no firm interpretation or meaning to offer. They are in-between places, where you can't quite trust your perceptions.
Artist Bio:
Mary Gibney is a Minneapolis artist and a current member of Rosalux Gallery. She has a BFA from the University of Minnesota and has exhibited widely in Minneapolis as well as in other locations. She likes small bars with live music, biking down alleys, and the joy of discovering visual details of the city.

Rosalux Gallery hours are 12-4 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.
The gallery is located at 315 W 48th Street in Minneapolis. Rosalux is always free and open to the public.
